George F. Smith, CPF

Colonel George F. Smith, CPF, US Army (Retired), is an IAF-certified professional facilitator and a specialist in strategic and quality management in the government and military arena.

With over 30 years of experience in both the Army and state government, George has exceptional experience in large organization group dynamics, meeting and event planning, organizational redesign, leadership development and training, change management, and business and strategic planning.

Colonel Smith gained leadership experience as an Army Officer through command assignments from Platoon to Brigade level. His military career also included responsibilities for research and development, officer pre-commissioning training and development, financial and logistical management, and strategic simulation. George spent six years with the Georgia Department of Defense (DOD), initially as an internal consultant to the Department Head, and later managing construction and facilities, information technology, state finance and organizational development. He was responsible for implementation of the departmental strategic management process and was a key member of the change management team that guided the department through a total transformation. His experience includes the planning and conduct of a wide-range of meetings, from monthly staff meetings (10-20 participants) to semi-annual strategic planning workshops (30-40 participants) and annual senior leadership conferences of over 150 participants. He has also planned and executed small and large (over 700 participants) military reunions. George is a member of the Georgia Oglethorpe Award Process (GOAP) Board of Examiners (the state-level Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award Criteria for Performance Excellence) and is experienced in application review, on site assessments and the U. S. Army version of the criteria, the Army Performance Improvement Criteria (APIC). He was a key member of the Georgia DOD team that prepared its first Georgia Oglethorpe Award Application and the 2000 APIC application. As a private consultant, he assisted Georgia DOD during preparation of their 2001 GOAP application. Colonel Smith has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering Degree from The Georgia Institute of Technology. He is also a graduate of the Duke University Fuqua School of Business Program for Manager Development.
